Falernum is a spiritous syrup originating from Barbados made from rum, lime, almond, clove, ginger, and sugar. It began as a Bajan staple in drinks and cooking. There is much speculation over how it got its name, but it is mostly agreed upon that it was due to a cultural miscommunication. When an English colonist asked a local Bajan what was in her mysterious and delicious concoction, she replied ÒhafÕa learn ÔemÓ in her heavy accent. Only capable of understanding the QueenÕs English, the colonist thought she meant the secret ingredient was called ÒfalernumÓ and it stuck. The special ingredient in our recipe is the Kaffir lime leaf Ð a species of lime with a potent floral flavor, commonly used in Thai and Cambodian cuisine. Use our falernum in your favorite tiki libations or add a tropical twist to your Old Fashioned.
